Volujak Mountain is a historically significant border mountain, once marking the divide between the Austro-Hungarian Empire and the Ottoman Empire. Today, it forms the natural boundary between Bosnia and Herzegovina and Montenegro.

Visitors can explore ancient border towers along the Volujak ridge, which stretches over 2,000 meters in elevation. These relics of the past are scattered across the rugged landscape.

Peaks and Terrain

Highest peak Velika Vlasulja (2,336 m)

Volujak boasts numerous peaks over 2,000 meters, with the highest being Velika Vlasulja (2,336 m). Other notable peaks include Široka Točila (2,297 m), Studenac (2,296 m), and Previja (2,273 m). The mountain’s karst and glacial features make it a fascinating destination for nature enthusiasts.

Flora and Fauna

Up to an altitude of 1,600 m, Volujak is under beech and conifer forest, and above that altitude there are grasslands.

The slopes of Volujak support a rich variety of wildlife, medicinal herbs, berries, and mushrooms.

Alpine pastures on the southern and western slopes are dotted with shepherds’ huts, where traditional livestock farming continues.

From Volujak, visitors can enjoy panoramic views of nearby mountains, including Maglić, Lebršnik, Zelengora, and Durmitor, as well as Trnovačko Lake, a glacial lake at 1,660 meters, which offers breathtaking views from the peaks of Volujak.

Accessibility

The easiest access to Volujak is through the Sutjeska National Park. The M20 highway (Foča-Gacko) runs along the western base of the mountain, providing convenient entry points.

the Volujak Mountain Lodge / Papin do sits at 1,443 meters in Papina Valley on the way the peaks of Volujak (Vlasulja 2,336 m), Studenac (2,296 m), and Badnjine (2,243 m), and close to Jagodino Lake and the Sutjeska River source. Accessible via an 8 km gravel road, the lodge offers 30 beds across four rooms, a kitchen with drinking water, solar and wind-powered electricity, and sanitary facilities with showers. it is open upon request.
