Nestled at the base of the karst mountain Bašajkovac, under the steep cliffs of Crvenice, lies the enchanting source of the Bistrica River, known as Duman.
The name “Duman” derives from the Turkish word for “smoke” or “fog,” reflecting the misty veil that sometimes forms from water droplets during high water levels in the winter months.
This phenomenon is similar in beauty to the famous Buna River spring near Mostar.
In the summer, Duman offers a refreshing coolness, making it a popular spot for locals and visitors alike.
It’s a beloved destination for picnics and leisurely outings, with some adventurous souls even taking the plunge from the high rocks into the pool known as Bent. This small, square pool, carved out at the source, is about three meters deep and was created in 1537.
Duman is not only a natural wonder but also a site of historical significance. It is believed to be the cradle of life in the Livno area and the possible location or vicinity of the ancient medieval fortress Bistrički grad.
Nearby, you can find the old bridge on Duman, just a hundred meters from the spring. This bridge, which spans the Bistrica River as it flows through Livno and ends in the Livanjsko field, dates back to the late 17th or early 18th century.
Its architectural style suggests Ottoman origins.
