Explore the scenic surroundings of Ljubuški, home to seven necropolises with 214 ancient tombstones, known as stećci. These include 88 plates, 78 chests, one chest with a base, nine sarcophagi, and 48 unidentified plates and chests. Half of the 176 described monuments are plates, the other half chests, with the sarcophagi being fewer but more artistically intricate.
Out of 176 monuments, 81 are adorned with decorations, including 33 with cross symbols, particularly in Gornji Studenci. Common motifs include shields with swords, basin symbols, human figures, twisted ropes, crescents, rosettes, trefoils, wheels, spirals, hunting scenes, falcons, and tournaments.
The region had several stone carving workshops, each with unique influences. Most monuments date back to the 14th and 15th centuries, with some possibly as early as the 12th century.
The Bijača Necropolis in Ljubuški is one of 20 medieval necropolises of stećci designated as UNESCO World Heritage Sites in Bosnia and Herzegovina.
