Mak Dizdar, born on October 17, 1917, in Stolac, is considered one of the greatest poets of Bosnia and Herzegovina. He spent most of his life in Sarajevo, where he passed away on July 14, 1971. In 1966, he published the poetry book “Stone Sleeper,” regarded as the pinnacle of his literary work and a foundational piece of Bosnian literature.
Towards the end of his life, Dizdar wished to return to his hometown, but this desire was never fulfilled. However, in 1997, on the 90th anniversary of his birth, the Mak Dizdar Foundation posthumously fulfilled his wish by establishing Makova Hiža, a museum and gallery dedicated to his life and work.
Makova Hiža is not his birthplace or grave; it is a subtle place where Mak’s spirit resides through his manuscripts, books, notes, and every poem and word he wrote. Due to Mak’s connection with the Medieval Tombstones Graveyards | stećci, Makova Hiža also serves as a home for the art of these medieval tombstones. It includes scholarly works and art inspired by these unique standing stones.
The Mak Dizdar Foundation, which runs Makova Hiža, is dedicated to protecting and promoting Bosnia and Herzegovina’s cultural heritage, especially in Stolac and Herzegovina.
