Located in the heart of Jajce’s bustling bazaar, the Esma Sultanija Mosque was originally built in 1749/50, according to the inscription above its portal. The mosque’s founder, Emir Mustafa, also established a fountain, an elementary school (mekteb), and a cemetery within the mosque complex.

A popular legend surrounds the mosque’s name, attributing its construction to Esma Sultanija, the wife of Bosnian governor Mehmed Pasha Muhsinović. According to the tale, Esma Sultanija, suffering from illness, was advised by astrologers that building three charitable foundations would restore her health. Using her jewelry, she funded the construction of two bridges over the Vrbas River and this beautiful mosque in Jajce.

In 1993, the Esma Sultanija Mosque was destroyed to its foundations, along with all its associated structures.

However, from 2003 to 2010, the mosque was meticulously restored, and ongoing efforts are being made to revitalize the entire mosque complex.
