Founded on the initiative of Jurislav Korenić, one of the most prominent theatre directors from the region in the 20th century, the Festival of Small and Experimental Theatre Scenes is among the oldest festivals of its kind in Eastern and Southeastern Europe. Established in Sarajevo, the festival quickly became one of the most important theatrical events in the former Yugoslavia, known for its refined taste in experimentation and innovation on stage.
Originally conceived as a showcase of Yugoslav theatres, the festival drew attention for its bold programming and openness to avant-garde performance. A distinctive feature of the festival was its inclusion of groundbreaking international experimental productions, many of which were presented before their creators achieved global recognition as leading figures in contemporary theatre.
Among the notable guests of the festival was the legendary Living Theatre from New York, whose appearance marked a highlight in the event’s rich and daring history.
