Located on the left bank of the Bregava River, just 50 meters west of the famous Inat-ćuprija bridge, stands the Ćuprijska Mosque, the third oldest mosque in Stolac.
Before its construction, this area was known as Hamam-mahala, named after the public bath built here by Silahdar Husein-pasha in the late 16th or early 17th century.
The mosque, a legacy of Hadži Alija Hadžisalihović, was constructed around February 14, 1736. Hadži Alija, originally from Stolac but living in Cairo, funded the mosque and its adjacent school, though he passed away in Cairo before their completion.
Interesting to note is that Hadži Alija’s family and followers maintained the mosque throughout the years, enduring floods and other calamities.
The mosque was expanded in 1765/66 by Hadži Muhamed, who added the minaret, giving it its current appearance.
Constructed from finely cut stone, the mosque features a distinctive minaret and a beautiful courtyard with a fountain built in 1935. The mosque’s dimensions are 8.76×7.97 meters internally, with a total area of 127.91 square meters including the walls and porch.
In 2003, it was declared a national monument of Bosnia and Herzegovina.
