Vidoški is a medieval town perched on a hill above Stolac, on the left bank of the Bregava river. Nestled along this serene river, Vidoški dates back to 1444, originally named after the river Vidoštica. Once part of Duke Stjepan Kosača’s lands, Vidoški’s strategic location on the trade routes frequented by Dubrovnik traders made it a vital hub in the region of Dubrava.
Vidoški was renowned for its sophisticated water supply system, utilizing cisterns to provide fresh water to its inhabitants. The town was a bustling center with residential, military, religious, and commercial buildings, showcasing the rich architectural heritage of the time. Notably, Vidoški featured 13 impressive defense towers.
In 1465, Vidoški came under Ottoman rule, leading to several phases of construction and reconstruction that further enhanced the town’s infrastructure. The Ottoman period left a significant mark on the town’s architectural and cultural landscape.
The Austro-Hungarian era brought further developments, including the construction of a fort at the town’s highest point. This fortification marked Vidoški as the largest fortified town in Herzegovina until the early 19th century.
Overlooking the Vidovo plain and the serene Bregava river, Vidoški is surrounded by the picturesque hills of Hrgud, Komanje, Ošanići, and Bašnik. The town’s scenic beauty and historical significance make it a must-visit destination.
Declared a National Monument of Bosnia and Herzegovina in 2003, Vidoški continues to preserve its historical legacy.
Since 2015, in the old town of Vidoški is organized a medieval fair called Stolačka tarča, celebrating its rich cultural heritage.
