The Tara River originates in Montenegro under Mount Komovi and its length is 140 km. Tara cut a phenomenal canyon 82 km long and 1333 m deep, which makes it the deepest in Europe, and the second in the world, right after the Grand Canyon on the Colorado River.
The last 40 km of Tara’s stream and canyon are in Bosnia and Herzegovina, while in several places the river forms the border between Bosnia and Herzegovina and Montenegro. In Šćepan Polje, Tara and Piva form the river Drina.
The most attractive part for rowing is the last 15 km of the river, and BH White Water has included that part of the river on the map.
Commercial rafting has been developed on this section, so from May to September you can expect a big crowd on the river. Tara is one of the few rivers where a tourist area has been developed with rafting on wooden rafts. This section of the river is adorned with unreal landscapes, the constant and dynamic flow of the river is rated III (due to the high water level in the spring due to the length of the rapids, the technical rating is from III – IV. Recommended boats for descent are: PK (inflatable kayak/canoe), hard hull kayak and raft boats.
