Markale | Sarajevo

The “Markale” is the name commonly used for the city market in Sarajevo. The project for the market was created in 1894 under the name “Markthalle fur Sarajevo”. Gradska tržnica, or the City Market, is a large indoor marketplace located in the heart of Sarajevo.

It was built in the Neo-Renaissance style in the late 19th century during the Austro-Hungarian period by the architect August Butsch and has been an important hub for trade and commerce in the city ever since.

The market is divided into several sections, each with its own unique offerings. The ground floor is home to a variety of meat, fish, and produce vendors, selling everything from vegetables to locally sourced meats.

Gradska tržnica is a popular destination for both locals and tourists alike, offering a unique glimpse into Sarajevo’s history and culture through its vibrant marketplace.
